about

The Dirty Truckers got together in 1999 when Tom Baker and his former Nana band mates regrouped to pursue a decidedly American rock n' roots direction. The result is the debut CD, Bush League Romance. Released on their own label, Diorama Records, Bush League Romance was cut over a few months and a few cold beers at Woolly Mammoth studios in Boston, MA, with Dave Minehan (The Neighborhoods, Westerberg) at the helm.

Drawing on kick-ass influences such as Cheap Trick, Steve Earle and Soul Asylum, the Dirty Truckers rock hard and have a good time doing it. According to Boston Soundcheck Magazine, "the band's sound is a mixture of '80s Rolling Stones as led by Keith and Ron's two-guitar assault and f*ck you sonic attitude". Miles of Music (www.milesofmusic.com) was lost in "the aroma of beer, the haze of cigarette smoke and the roar of punchy guitar".

Bush League Romance, whose core members include Baker (vox, guitar), Roland Smith (bass, vox) and Jim Delios (drums, vox) was recorded in a loose, leave the mistakes in, kind of way - the way any good bar band would do it. Helping fill out the sound were guitar slingers Minehan, Jim Buni (Buttercup) and Andy Pastore (Charlie Chesterman and his Legendary Motorbikes). The result, as summed up by Freight Train Boogie (www.freighttrainboogie.com), is that "the songs are good and anyone liking rowdy fall-down-drunk Midwestern bar rock will just love this!".

Some Reviews:

The MP3 Files by Bill Holmes - www.cosmik.com
"Gravel voiced (and I mean that as a compliment) Tom Baker leads this crew who sound like they're from the South instead of Boston. Bush League Romance comes with simple instructions - "made to be played LOUD!" - and with a title like that you can imagine how disheveled the relationships are in these songs. "Settle Down," a strong rocker, cleverly tackles that age old "are we lovers or friends" routine; "Backpack" is equally lyrical, as is "Hotel Highway View." But while their subjects may have long faces from lost love, the band has a great sense of humor, listing album titles that didn't make the cut in the liner notes and detailing instrumentation as "Swashbuckling guitar" or "Deep Purple bass." Guest Dave Minehan adds some flashy axe to the mix as well. The DTs toss in covers from Squeeze and The Replacements, and if you had to slot their sound in a category, they might be the midpoint of those two classic bands. A real winner!"

Alt-Country Radio NL
"Is has to be said: Bush League Romance is fascinating from start till end. Head equipment are the two guitars, where behind we hear the raw husky voice of Baker. Plus the bouncing bass and drums sometimes with an extra drive and you have the countryrocksound caught in a nutshell. "...

Freight Train Boogie
"The Truckers manage to serve up enough raw-boned rock and thrashing almost-punk to bring to mind a little groundbreaking group by the name of The Replacements. The Truckers share the same kind of swaggering, staggering rawk with burly guitar lines and pounding, scattershot drums with a pulsating bass that's enough to drive you nuts. " ...

Dream Tower - Japan
"This kind of real American rock is not welcomed among current hit chart , but this rough and tough band is going their own way. The opening track "Settle Down" just grabs my heart. That is the best beginning of rock record. Nothing but pop and catchy. This song is the ideal roots rock song. " ... "That kind of blue sky sound may not be bone in Japan, where the climate is so damped."
